Launched in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain extension is the sole TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to purchase john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level domains remained online.
